California’s Camping and Resorts Commission voted Thursday to approve the $2.8 million Camp Industry Center, a proposed $10.5 million office complex in Camp Washington and the first of what will be hundreds of millions of dollars of new and expanded office space across the state.
The complex, which is slated to be completed by 2022, will be the largest indoor-outdoor complex in the nation.
In addition to the building itself, the complex will include about 1,400 hotel rooms, a gym, a conference center, and more than 1,000 meeting rooms.
The center, which will also include a hotel, convention center, spa, and conference center and a hotel restaurant, is slated for completion in 2022.
In a press release, Camp Washington Mayor Michael D. McElroy said the new office will be a boon to Camp Washington.
“Camp Washington has been one of the premier outdoor recreation destinations in the United States for nearly 70 years,” McElry said.
“This is a great day for the community and I am pleased to be a part of the process that will create a vibrant outdoor community for generations to come.”
The commission also approved the project as a pilot program, meaning the city and county will be responsible for construction and maintenance.
The $2 million Office Complex, which sits between Camp Washington’s existing indoor and outdoor offices, is expected to be complete by 2022.
The Camp Industry Development Center, which was approved as part of a $2 billion renovation project in 2015, will also be complete in 2022, but its completion date has not been determined.
The city is paying for the $1.5 billion Office Complex project with the state, and McElriys office is responsible for its construction and operation.
Camp Washington’s city council and the county council approved the $12 million Office Facility in January.
The office will include approximately 1,600 rooms, offices, meeting rooms, and offices and conference rooms.
The facility will be located at 1st and Jackson streets.
Camp Industry Center is expected start construction in 2021, and is expected be completed in 2022 or 2024.
The project will cost about $100 million, but it will likely include a mix of federal and private financing.
It is expected the office will generate between $20 million to $25 million annually in tax revenue.
Camp Industries will be among a number of state and local governments that have been trying to attract and retain outdoor recreation businesses in recent years.
In 2018, the California Department of Finance estimated that outdoor recreation generated about $9 billion in economic activity in the state in 2020.
